  • Universal influenza vaccine candidate, collaboration with Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. and Japan’s National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation Health and Nutrition (NIBN)

VisMederi highlighted its collaboration with Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. and Japan’s National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition (NIBN) in the European Phase 1 clinical programme evaluating a universal influenza vaccine candidate formulated with Sumitomo Pharma’s proprietary TLR7 adjuvant, DSP-0546.

The programme builds on work led by Dr. Takuya Yamamoto and Dr. Ayae Nishiyama at NIBN and follows the initiation of the Phase 1 study in Europe, first announced on 14 May 2024. Recent communications from Sumitomo Pharma and NIBN include an interim analysis update covering cross-reactivity as an exploratory endpoint, alongside the primary endpoints previously reported.

VisMederi’s contribution focuses on specialized immunological testing and scientific support, helping ensure that complex assays are performed with the rigor and consistency required to generate robust, interpretable clinical evidence.

“Working with Sumitomo Pharma and NIBN has been an excellent and highly productive collaboration. We are proud to support a programme that is pushing the field forward, and we recognize that studies like this are demanding, both because of the uniqueness of the vaccine approach and the complexity as well as the novelty of the immunological assays involved, especially the cross-reactivity assay, a pivotal test to identify common epitopes on HA antigen,” said Emanuele Montomoli, Founder of VisMederi.

VisMederi looks forward to continuing its support as the programme progresses, contributing its experience in immunological evaluation to help advance next-generation approaches aimed at broader protection against influenza.
